Can irregular periods cause infertility?
Female InfertilityAnswer
Yes, having irregular periods can often be a sign of an underlying issue that may lead to infertility. At SCI Hospital, we counsel our patients that regular menstrual periods are usually a good indicator that a woman is ovulating (releasing an egg) regularly. If your periods are irregular, it often suggests that ovulation is not happening consistently, or perhaps not at all. If an egg isn't released regularly, it becomes difficult to conceive because there's no egg available for sperm to fertilize, or it’s hard to time intercourse correctly. Conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders can cause irregular periods and affect fertility, and these are things we can investigate and treat.
