What is an enlarged prostate (BPH)?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly affects aging men. As the prostate grows, it can press against the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, difficulty starting urination, and the feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.

The prostate is a small gland found only in men. It is located just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body.

As men age, the prostate may gradually enlarge. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). The word "benign" means that the enlargement is not cancerous, and BPH is not the same as prostate cancer.

An enlarged prostate can narrow the urethra, making it harder for urine to flow normally. As a result, many men experience urinary symptoms that may affect their daily activities and sleep.

Common symptoms include:

• Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia).
• Difficulty starting urination.
• Weak or interrupted urine stream.
• Feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely.
• Sudden urge to urinate.
• Dribbling after urination.

Although BPH is a common part of aging, it should not be ignored. If left untreated, severe enlargement may lead to urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or kidney problems.
