What is a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)?

A Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) is a simple physical examination in which a doctor gently inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to assess the size, shape, and consistency of the prostate gland. It helps evaluate conditions such as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and prostate cancer, and is often performed along with a PSA blood test.

A Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) is one of the most common clinical examinations used to assess prostate health. Since the prostate gland lies just in front of the rectum, it can be examined through the rectal wall.

The examination usually takes less than a minute and provides valuable information that cannot be obtained from symptoms alone.

Why is a DRE performed?

Your urologist may recommend a DRE if you have:

• Frequent urination.
• Weak urine stream.
• Difficulty passing urine.
• Blood in the urine.
• An elevated PSA level.
• Persistent urinary symptoms.
• A family history of prostate cancer.

It may also be included as part of a routine prostate evaluation in men with urinary complaints.

What can a DRE detect?

A DRE helps the doctor assess:

• The size of the prostate.
• Whether the prostate feels enlarged.
• The shape and symmetry of the gland.
• Areas that feel unusually hard, irregular, or tender.
• Signs that may require further investigation.

Although a DRE provides important clinical information, it is only one part of the overall evaluation.

Is a DRE painful?

Most men experience mild pressure or temporary discomfort, but the examination is generally not painful. It is quick, safe, and usually completed within a minute.

Is a DRE enough to diagnose prostate disease?

No. A DRE alone cannot confirm or rule out prostate conditions. Your urologist may also recommend:

• PSA blood test.
• Urine examination.
• Ultrasound or MRI, when indicated.
• Additional investigations if clinically required.

The results of all these assessments are considered together before making a diagnosis.
