What is NT scan in pregnancy?
PregnancyAnswer
A nuchal translucency (NT) scan is an ultrasound performed early in pregnancy, typically between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. During the scan, the technician will measure the thickness of the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby's neck. This measurement, along with maternal blood tests assessing the levels of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and free beta-hCG, helps assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome and other genetic conditions.
The NT scan is a screening test, meaning it does not provide a definitive diagnosis. A high-risk result based on the NT scan will usually lead to further testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), to obtain a more conclusive diagnosis. It is recommended that you discuss the results with your doctor to fully understand the implications and to make informed decisions regarding further testing.
