Sperm count refers to the number of sperm present in a man's semen sample. It is usually reported as sperm concentration, meaning the number of sperm per millilitre of semen.

Is sperm count the only measure of fertility?

No. A man may have a sperm concentration within the reference range but still experience fertility problems because of abnormalities in:

• Sperm motility.
• Sperm morphology.
• Semen volume.
• Sperm function.
• Other reproductive factors.

Similarly, a lower sperm concentration does not automatically mean that natural conception is impossible.

What can cause a low sperm count?

Low sperm concentration can be associated with:

What happens if the sperm count is very low?

• Scrotal ultrasound when indicated.
• Genetic testing in selected cases.
• Additional evaluation for possible obstruction or impaired sperm production.

If sperm are completely absent from the semen, the condition is called azoospermia and requires a more detailed evaluation.

Can sperm count be improved?
