What are the symptoms of male infertility?

Male infertility often has no obvious symptoms other than difficulty conceiving. However, some men may experience signs such as erectile or ejaculation problems, reduced sexual desire, pain or swelling around the testicles, or symptoms associated with hormonal or reproductive conditions. A proper fertility evaluation is needed to identify the underlying cause.

Unlike many other medical conditions, male infertility usually does not cause noticeable symptoms. A man may feel completely healthy while having an abnormal sperm count, poor sperm motility, or another fertility-related problem.

The most common sign is simply difficulty achieving pregnancy with a partner despite regular unprotected intercourse.

Possible signs associated with male infertility

Some men may experience:

• Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.
• Problems with ejaculation.
• Reduced sexual desire.
• Pain, swelling, or a lump around the testicles.
• Small or unusually enlarged testicles.
• Recurrent infections affecting the reproductive system.

However, having any of these symptoms does not automatically mean a man is infertile.

Can a man have infertility without symptoms?

Yes. This is very common. Conditions such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm morphology, or azoospermia may not cause any physical symptoms.

This is why semen analysis is an important part of male fertility evaluation when a couple is experiencing difficulty conceiving.

When should a man consider a fertility evaluation?

A man should consider seeing a urologist or andrologist if:

• The couple has been unable to conceive despite regular unprotected intercourse.
• A previous semen analysis was abnormal.
• There is a history of testicular problems or surgery.
• There are problems with erection or ejaculation.
• There is testicular pain, swelling, or a lump.
• There is a history of chemotherapy, radiation, or conditions that may affect fertility.
