A urine test checks for blood, infection, crystals, and other abnormalities that may indicate kidney stones or other urinary tract disorders. It also helps detect whether a urinary tract infection is present.
Blood tests measure kidney function and evaluate substances such as calcium, uric acid, and creatinine. Abnormal levels may increase the risk of kidney stone formation and help identify the underlying cause.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the kidneys and urinary tract. It is a safe, painless, and radiation-free test that is commonly used to detect kidney stones, especially in pregnant women and patients who should avoid radiation exposure.
A CT KUB (Computed Tomography of the Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing kidney stones. It can accurately detect even very small stones, identify their exact size and location, and reveal whether they are blocking urine flow.
In some cases, a KUB X-ray may be used to detect certain types of kidney stones and monitor their movement during treatment. However, not all kidney stones are visible on X-rays, so additional imaging may be required.
