What is URS (Ureteroscopy) for kidney stones?

URS (Ureteroscopy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove or break kidney and ureteric stones without making any external incision. A thin scope is passed through the natural urinary tract to reach the stone, where a laser is used to fragment it into smaller pieces for removal or natural passage.

Ureteroscopy (URS) is one of the most commonly performed procedures for treating stones located in the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder). It is also used in selected cases for kidney stones. 

Because the procedure is performed through the natural urinary passage, no external cuts or stitches are required, making recovery quicker than traditional open surgery. 

How is URS performed?

During the procedure: 

• The patient is given anesthesia to ensure comfort. 
• A thin ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra and bladder into the ureter.
