What is RIRS for kidney stones?

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a minimally invasive laser procedure used to remove kidney stones without making any external incision. A flexible ureteroscope is passed through the natural urinary tract to reach the kidney, where a laser breaks the stone into tiny fragments that are either removed or passed naturally through urine.

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is one of the most advanced treatments available for kidney stones. It is especially effective for stones located inside the kidney and offers excellent stone clearance with minimal pain and a faster recovery compared to traditional surgery. 

Unlike open surgery, RIRS is performed through the body's natural urinary passage, meaning no cuts or stitches are required.

How is RIRS performed?

•  A thin, flexible ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and kidney. 
•  A high-precision laser (Holmium laser) is used to break the stone into very small fragments. 
•  The fragments are either removed using tiny instruments or allowed to pass naturally in the urine. 
•  In some cases, a temporary DJ stent may be placed to help urine drain smoothly while the kidney heals.

RIRS may be recommended for patients who have:
