ESWL vs URS: Which treatment is right for kidney stones?

ESWL and URS are both effective treatments for kidney stones, but they are used in different situations. ESWL is a non-invasive procedure that uses shock waves to break stones, while URS is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that removes or fragments stones using a laser. The best treatment depends on the size, location, and type of the stone, as well as your overall health.

Both Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) and Ureteroscopy (URS) are commonly used to treat kidney stones. However, they work in different ways and are recommended for different types of stones. 

When is ESWL recommended?

ESWL may be recommended when:

• The stone is small to medium in size. 
• The stone is located in a suitable position for shock wave treatment. 
• There is no severe urinary blockage. 
• There is no active urinary tract infection. 
• A non-invasive treatment is preferred. 

During ESWL, shock waves are focused on the stone from outside the body, breaking it into small fragments that pass naturally through the urine. 

When is URS recommended?

URS is commonly recommended when:

• The stone is lodged in the ureter. 
• The stone is unlikely to pass naturally. 
• ESWL is less likely to be effective. 
• Immediate stone removal is preferred. 
• The stone requires laser fragmentation. 

During URS, a thin endoscope is passed through the urinary tract, and a laser is used to break the stone into tiny fragments that are removed or allowed to pass naturally.
