It can identify blood in the urine, crystals, infection, and other abnormalities that help doctors diagnose kidney stones and determine the most appropriate treatment.
A urine test is one of the first investigations your doctor may recommend if kidney stones are suspected. While the test cannot actually "see" the stone, it provides valuable information about your urinary system and helps your urologist understand what may be causing your symptoms.

Kidney stones often scratch the lining of the urinary tract as they move, causing microscopic or visible blood in the urine. Even if you cannot see blood with the naked eye, a urine test can detect it.
Certain minerals in the urine, such as calcium oxalate or uric acid crystals, may indicate an increased risk of kidney stone formation. Although crystals alone do not confirm a stone, they provide important clues.
A urine test can detect bacteria and white blood cells, helping identify an infection that may occur alongside a kidney stone. Treating the infection is essential before or during stone management.
The acidity or alkalinity (pH) of urine can help determine the type of kidney stone you may have. Different stones tend to form in different urine pH environments.

Although a urine test is an important part of the diagnostic process, it is usually combined with imaging tests such as an ultrasound or CT KUB scan to confirm the presence, size, and location of the kidney stone.
