How Is Hydrocele Surgery Performed?

Hydrocele surgery, known as hydrocelectomy, involves accessing the hydrocele, draining the accumulated fluid, and treating the surrounding sac so that fluid is less likely to collect again.

The exact surgical technique depends on the size and type of hydrocele and the patient's individual anatomy.

During hydrocele surgery, the surgeon generally:

• Makes a small surgical incision to access the hydrocele
• Separates the hydrocele sac from surrounding tissues
• Drains the accumulated fluid
• Treats the hydrocele sac using an appropriate surgical technique
• Closes the incision after completing the procedure

The surgeon also examines the testicle and surrounding structures as appropriate during the procedure.

Hydrocelectomy is different from simply removing the fluid with a needle. Needle aspiration can drain the swelling but may have a higher likelihood of the fluid returning.
