Can Hydrocele Be Treated With Sclerotherapy?

Yes. Sclerotherapy may be used after draining a hydrocele to reduce the chance of fluid returning. However, recurrence can still occur, and the suitability of this approach depends on the type and characteristics of the hydrocele.

Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which the fluid inside the hydrocele is first drained, followed by the introduction of a sclerosing agent into the hydrocele sac. The aim is to cause the lining of the sac to react and reduce further fluid accumulation.

It may be considered in selected patients, particularly when conventional surgery is not preferred or when the patient has circumstances that make surgery less suitable.

However, sclerotherapy has some limitations:

• The hydrocele can recur after treatment
• More than one treatment may sometimes be required
• Temporary pain, swelling, or inflammation can occur
• It may not be appropriate for every type or size of hydrocele

For a persistent symptomatic hydrocele, hydrocelectomy may be discussed as a more definitive surgical option.
