Can Hydrocele Be Treated With Medicines?

Medicines generally do not remove the fluid-filled hydrocele itself. If an underlying infection or inflammation is contributing to a secondary hydrocele, medicines may be used to treat that underlying condition. A persistent symptomatic hydrocele may require a procedure.

A hydrocele is a collection of fluid around the testicle. There is usually no medication that can directly dissolve or permanently remove this fluid collection.

However, treatment may depend on the cause:

• If an infection is responsible, appropriate treatment may be prescribed for the infection.
• If inflammation or another underlying condition is contributing to the hydrocele, treating that condition may be part of management.
• A small, painless hydrocele may sometimes be monitored without active treatment.
• A persistent or symptomatic hydrocele may require drainage or hydrocelectomy depending on the clinical situation.

Pain-relieving medicines may also be recommended for discomfort when appropriate, but they do not eliminate the hydrocele itself.
