Can Hydrocele Be Treated With Aspiration?

Yes. Hydrocele aspiration involves using a needle to drain the fluid from around the testicle. It can temporarily reduce the swelling, but the fluid may collect again, so aspiration is generally not considered a definitive treatment for a persistent adult hydrocele.

During aspiration, a needle is inserted into the hydrocele and the accumulated fluid is removed. This can provide temporary relief from the size and pressure caused by the swelling.

However, aspiration does not necessarily address the underlying sac that produces or collects the fluid. As a result, the hydrocele can recur after aspiration.

Aspiration may be considered in selected situations, particularly when surgery is not appropriate or when temporary reduction of the swelling is needed. In some cases, a sclerosing agent may be used after drainage to reduce the chance of recurrence.

For a persistent, symptomatic hydrocele, a urologist may discuss hydrocelectomy as a more definitive treatment option.
