Why Is Cystoscopy Done?

Cystoscopy is performed to investigate urinary symptoms and examine the urethra and bladder directly. It may be recommended for problems such as blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, painful urination, urinary frequency, difficulty emptying the bladder, or suspected abnormalities in the bladder or urethra.

A cystoscopy allows a urologist to directly examine the inside of the urethra and bladder when other tests do not provide enough information or when a specific abnormality needs to be investigated.

Common reasons for cystoscopy include:

• Recurrent urinary tract infections
• Persistent burning or pain while urinating
• Frequent or urgent urination
• Difficulty starting or completing urination

• Evaluation of suspected bladder abnormalities or tumors
