Dr. Gautam Banga
MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MCh - UrologyCystoscopy is a specialised type of endoscopic procedure used to examine the urethra and bladder. The term endoscopy is broader and refers to procedures that use a camera-equipped instrument to examine the inside of different organs or body passages.
Cystoscopy and endoscopy both allow doctors to examine internal structures using a camera-equipped instrument, but they differ in the areas examined.
Cystoscopy:
Specifically examines the urethra and bladder.
Is performed by a urologist.
May be used to investigate blood in the urine, recurrent urinary infections, bladder stones, or suspected abnormalities.
Can sometimes allow a biopsy or treatment during the procedure.
Endoscopy:
Is a general term for procedures that examine the inside of the body.
The type of endoscopy depends on the organ being investigated.
Examples include gastroscopy for the upper digestive tract and colonoscopy for the colon.
May be used for diagnosis, tissue sampling, or certain treatments.
Although cystoscopy is a form of endoscopic examination, a digestive endoscopy does not examine the bladder or urethra. The appropriate procedure depends on the symptoms and the organ that needs evaluation.
At SCI International Hospital, Dr. Gautam Banga evaluates urinary symptoms and recommends cystoscopy when direct examination of the urethra and bladder is clinically appropriate. The procedure is selected according to the patient's condition and diagnostic requirements.
