What Is Flexible Cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy is a procedure that uses a thin, bendable cystoscope to examine the urethra and bladder. It is commonly performed with local anaesthetic gel and is often used when a urologist needs to investigate urinary symptoms or examine the bladder lining.

During flexible cystoscopy, a thin flexible instrument containing a camera and light is gently passed through the urethra into the bladder. The urologist can view the urinary tract on a monitor and assess the bladder lining and urethra.

Flexible cystoscopy may be used to investigate:

• Blood in the urine
• Recurrent urinary infections
• Persistent urinary symptoms
• Suspected bladder abnormalities
• Urethral narrowing
• Other conditions affecting the lower urinary tract

Because flexible cystoscopy is usually performed under local anaesthetic, patients generally remain awake during the examination. Some pressure, mild discomfort, or an urge to urinate may be experienced while the bladder is being examined.

The procedure itself is usually short, and most patients can return home soon afterward unless additional treatment or another type of anaesthesia is required.
