What Conditions Can Cystoscopy Detect?

Cystoscopy allows a urologist to directly examine the urethra and bladder and can help identify abnormalities such as bladder stones, urethral narrowing, bladder inflammation, abnormal tissue, and some bladder tumors.

A cystoscopy provides a direct view of the inside of the lower urinary tract. Depending on the patient's symptoms and the findings during the procedure, it may help identify or investigate:

• Bladder stones
• Urethral stricture or narrowing
• Inflammation of the bladder
• Abnormal areas or lesions in the bladder lining
• Sources of unexplained blood in the urine
• Certain bladder tumors or suspicious tissue
• Structural abnormalities of the urethra or bladder
• Changes that may require a biopsy or further investigation

Cystoscopy may also be used as part of follow-up for patients who have previously been treated for certain bladder conditions.

The procedure does not necessarily provide the complete diagnosis by itself. Depending on what is seen, the urologist may recommend urine tests, imaging, biopsy, or other investigations to establish the cause of the abnormality.
