Is Cystoscopy Painful?

A cystoscopy may cause some pressure, discomfort, or a brief stinging sensation, particularly when the cystoscope is inserted or when the bladder is filled. Flexible cystoscopy is usually performed with local anaesthetic gel to improve comfort. The level of discomfort varies between patients.

During a flexible cystoscopy, a local anaesthetic gel is usually applied to the urethra before the cystoscope is inserted. Patients may feel pressure or an urge to urinate while the bladder is being examined.

Some people may experience:

• Mild discomfort during insertion
• A brief burning or stinging sensation
• Pressure in the bladder
• An urge to urinate during the examination
• Mild burning while urinating for a short period afterward

Rigid cystoscopy may be performed under general or spinal anaesthesia, particularly when a biopsy or another treatment is planned, so the patient does not experience the procedure in the same way as an awake flexible cystoscopy.

If significant pain occurs during or after the procedure, or if symptoms become worse rather than gradually improving, the treating medical team should be contacted.
