Dr. Gautam Banga
MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MCh - UrologyYes. A small amount of blood or pink-coloured urine can occur temporarily after cystoscopy, particularly during the first day or two. However, heavy bleeding, blood clots, worsening symptoms, or difficulty passing urine require prompt medical assessment.
During cystoscopy, the instrument passes through the urethra into the bladder. This can cause mild irritation of the urinary tract, sometimes resulting in a small amount of blood in the urine.
Temporary symptoms may include:
Slightly pink or reddish urine
Mild burning during urination
Increased urinary frequency or urgency
Mild discomfort while passing urine
These symptoms usually improve as the urinary tract settles. If your doctor has not restricted your fluid intake, drinking adequate water may help.
Blood in the urine may last longer after a biopsy or another treatment performed during cystoscopy. Follow the instructions provided by your treating team.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:
Heavy or persistent bleeding
Blood clots in the urine
Inability to pass urine
Severe or worsening pain
Fever or chills
These symptoms should not be dismissed as routine post-procedure effects.
At SCI International Hospital, Dr. Gautam Banga provides post-cystoscopy guidance, including what degree of urinary bleeding may be expected and when further evaluation is necessary. Persistent or significant bleeding is assessed according to the patient's symptoms and clinical condition.
