Dr. Gautam Banga
MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MCh - UrologyYes. Although cystoscopy is generally safe, a urinary tract infection (UTI) can occasionally develop after the procedure. Symptoms may include burning during urination, increased urinary frequency, fever, or worsening urinary discomfort.
Cystoscopy involves passing an instrument through the urethra into the bladder. Despite appropriate sterile precautions, bacteria can occasionally enter the urinary tract and cause an infection.
Possible symptoms of a UTI after cystoscopy include:
Burning or pain while urinating that persists or worsens
An increased need to urinate
Urinary urgency
Cloudy or unusually strong-smelling urine
Lower abdominal discomfort
Fever or chills
Mild burning and a small amount of blood in the urine can occur temporarily after cystoscopy and do not automatically indicate an infection. However, symptoms that worsen or fail to improve should be medically assessed.
To reduce infection risk, the procedure is performed using appropriate sterile techniques. Antibiotics are not required routinely for every patient; their use depends on individual risk factors and clinical indications.
Seek prompt medical attention if you develop fever, chills, severe pain, or difficulty passing urine after cystoscopy.
At SCI International Hospital, Dr. Gautam Banga assesses urinary symptoms before cystoscopy and advises patients about possible infection symptoms after the procedure. If an infection is suspected, appropriate urine testing and treatment may be recommended based on the clinical findings.
