Hymen repair surgery

Hymen repair also known as hymenoplasty is a cosmetic surgery to repair, restore, or construct a women’s hymen. Hymen repair or restoration is also known as revirginization and is done by women for physical, cultural, or psychological reasons.

A hymen is a very thin piece of the vaginal membrane (mucosa) in the lower part of the vagina and is tightly stretched. The hymen can tear with active participation in gymnastics, cycling, and horse riding, with extensive use of tampons or intense falls. The hymen repair surgery is a delicate procedure that places the hymen ring and tissues close to each other. It is a simple procedure to repair a torn hymen or build a hymen that is not present.

Hymenoplasty treatment procedure

Hymen repair surgery is generally performed by a gynecologist and is done under local or general anesthesia. The hymen is repaired by reuniting the torn tags. Self-dissolvable sutures are used to join the torn tags and they dissolve in 15-20 days after the hymen repair surgery. It is crucial to maintain proper hygiene, keep the area clean and apply ointment as prescribed by the doctor. The hymen surgery involves three techniques-

Hymen stitching

A basic technique of hymen surgery is to sew together the broken hymens; the sutures get dissolved in 15-20 days after the surgery. It is advised that the patient visits the doctor for getting the sutures removed. The restoration process usually takes around 30-40 minutes and once the hymen surgery is completed, the patient is allowed to go home. The patient can achieve full recovery within a few weeks.

Hymen reconstruction

The hymen can be restored even if there is insufficient tissue available, by restoring live tissues harvested from the body. The procedure is done as an outpatient and the patient is allowed back home. After the complete restoration, the patient can start normal life within 3- days. For around three months or more, sexual intercourse should be avoided. After the full recovery, it will be like a normal hymen and there will be bleeding and sensations of discomfort while tearing.

Alloplant technique

Artificial techniques can be used to reconstruct the hymen if the body lacks tissues. Alloplants are biomaterials that are chemically processed and are often used for transplantation.

Recovery from hymen repair surgery

The hymen repair surgery procedure usually takes around 15- 60 minutes and is done under general anesthesia. There will be minor bleeding for 8-72 hours after the surgery. On average, six weeks are required for complete recovery after the hymen repair surgery. It is a daycare surgery and all daily normal activities can be started after the rest of 1-2 days. It is a completely safe treatment with no pain experienced. The reconstructed hymen is the same as the natural hymen and there will be no signs of surgery. After the surgery, it usually takes around 1-2 months for the stitches to completely dissolve and for the scars to get invisible.
