What is a bipolar hip replacement?
Hip ReplacementAnswer
A bipolar hip replacement is a type of partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty). It's most commonly used to treat certain types of hip fractures in older adults who are less active, not for treating arthritis. The implant is unique: it consists of a "ball within a ball." There is a smaller metal ball that fits onto the stem in the thigh bone, and this smaller ball can move within a larger, polished metal shell. This entire component then moves inside your natural hip socket. The design allows for two points of motion, which is thought to reduce wear on the natural cartilage of the socket.
