What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine and surgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye diseases and conditions related to vision. It encompasses both medical and surgical interventions for the eye and its related structures.

Eye Treatments Offered by SCI International Hospital

Cataract

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye that leads to blurred vision and can interfere with daily activities. Surgery is the only effective treatment for cataracts. At SCI International Hospital, we perform Phacoemulsification—a modern, micro-incision technique using foldable Intraocular Lenses (IOLs). We offer various types of IOLs, including Aspheric, Toric, and Multifocal, tailored to meet individual visual needs and restore clear sight.

Refractive Error

Refractive errors are among the most common vision problems, affecting how the eye focuses light. These include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (blurred vision), and presbyopia (age-related focus issues). Depending on the severity and type, treatment options may include eyeglasses, contact lenses, LASIK laser treatment (Customised or IntraLase), or Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) for more permanent correction.

Retinal Detachment, Vitreous Haemorrhage, and other retinal diseases

These conditions occur due to bleeding or the contraction of the vitreous gel inside the eye. At SCI Hospital, we treat retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, and other retinal diseases using both advanced laser procedures and surgical treatments, depending on the severity and nature of the condition.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

It is an age-related eye disorder that damages sharp and central vision, often blurring the centre of your sight. This occurs when the macula, a part of the retina, gets damaged. The condition can be managed through diagnostic tools like FA and OCT, laser treatments, and intravitreal injections using medications such as Lucentis, Avastin, Macugen, or Steroids.

Glaucoma

It is a group of eye conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure in the eye. Diagnosis involves procedures like OCT, Visual Field Analyzer, and Pachymetry. Treatment options include laser therapy and surgical procedures to prevent further vision loss.

Eye problems refer to any condition affecting vision or the health of the eyes. While some issues are age-related, others may arise due to injury or underlying health conditions. It is essential to consult an eye specialist when experiencing any symptoms. A healthy lifestyle and regular eye check-ups play a vital role in preventing many vision-related problems.
