Can birth control pills cause infertility?
Female InfertilityAnswer
This is a question many of our patients at SCI Hospital ask, and the answer is no, birth control pills do not cause infertility. Birth control pills are designed to prevent pregnancy while you are taking them. They work by stopping your body from releasing an egg each month or by making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. When you stop taking the pills, your body's natural hormonal cycle and ability to get pregnant usually return.
For some women, it might take a few months for their periods to become regular again after stopping the pill, but the pills themselves do not have a long-term negative effect on fertility.
